Is a gym really necessary?

Is it really necessary to have a gym membership to be in shape? I'm out to prove that it isn't. I REALLY want to prove that I can have a nice, in shape body with an "at home" exercise program.

I now have 2 exercise games for the Wii. I have Wii Fit and Jillian 2009. I've been enjoying them and doing them fairly regularly. I probably exercise for about 30 minutes 4-5 times a week. It's better than paying $50+ a month to show up maybe once or twice a week, right?

The reason I'm posting this is because I am doubtful. I think I can, I just don't know if I'm getting a great workout.

Please tell me what you think! Have you ever been committed to a home exercise program and noticed results?

I just quit my gym membership last month and turning back doesn't feel like an option.

I'll keep you posted. If I find myself turning into a sex goddess with abs of steel and sculpted arms, I'll let everyone know!

You already have an amazing, very "in-shape" body! Seriously...You are a sex goddess NOW! But, I will begrudgingly support you in looking even more incredible even as my body continues to expand at an astronomical speed. You'll have to let us know how you like the Wii exercise programs.

After my mission it took me 1 year to lose the 20lbs I'd gained. I lost it ALL without the gym! I swear by any of the FIRM videos. It uses hand weights. I also swear by running. You've always looked great though. Those Wii workouts sound like a lot of fun.

I second Ann Marie. I don't have a gym membership and haven't for almost 10 yrs. After having Ellie was addicted to the Firm videos (1 in particular) and I loved it and lost the weight fast. They guarantee results within 10 workouts and its no joke. I think a lot of people go the gym and workout, but don't really know what they are doing with weights, etc. The Firm video is so great. I should be better at it, and I know if I were I would look better too, but at least I know its a good workout option and I can do it at home. Allyson you look great whatever you do.

I love the wii fit, but I'm with you. I don't know how much it really helps. Trevor got on this program at home, it's the p90x and I have been doing the ab part and I have noticed a HUGE difference

No, I don't think you need a gym membership to get in shape and lose the weight. My problem is that I don't exercise at home. Or when I do attempt the treadmill at home it seems to take FOREVER! I sit and look around at everything else I could be doing (or eating) and so I don't last. We got our gym memberships the beginning of the year and have done pretty good using them so far. The time seems to pass faster on the treadmill for some reason. Maybe it's because I like to "people" watch. But, on the other hand, I have to admit that it makes it harder to go since it takes more time of my day to get there. Oh- and I wouldn't even know how to use the WII fit because I couldn't even turn a game on for Logan the other day. No clue how to use that thing. :-)

I agree with the others- you already look great Allyson!

You are amazing, my dear!! I wish I had your drive right now. I have to agree with everyone that you look fantastic!! I am a believer that you don't need a gym to work out. I'd rather be outside than inside a gym. I love to look around while I'm exercising (running, biking, etc...) like Jackie because it takes my mind off how hard it is. Also no matter how far I go away from my house, I still have to come back. When I'm on my treadmill, I can just step off and be done. I've short changed myself too many times that way. Anyways, I think you are doing a great job and I admire you for your determination!! There is a runner (book author) who always says "Waddle on" I love it. Keep it up.

You are all so nice!!! Thanks for your sweet comments! I'll ditto the nice things to each of you! If you all saw me in a swimsuit, you might change your minds though. :)

i think you can do it!! The thing for me is motivation. When I do it with someone I am more ready and willing to work out. And when I am using an at home video, I will NOT work out unless whoever else is in the house does it with me. I love the Wii! You do get a great work out and work up a sweat, even with just the games. Boxing is the best!! Keep updates going because I am curious to see your feedback :)

p.s. and you do have a killer body!

The thing is, you don't need to lose any weight...you seriously look amazing! Really...
Having said that...I also agree that you don't need a gym to get in shape, but for me, that's what helps. :) I just don't have very much self discipline. I wish that I loved running...runners always look great. So..if you find something that you love, please share!!
by the way, what is Jillian 2009??

Hi Allyson,
Yes, you can get in shape without a gym membership. I used to go a gym a few years ago because it was relatively cheap and was SO convenient for me at that time in my life. I would drop the kids off at Seminary and on my way home stop at the gym, do my thing, go home, get my last child off to school (around the corner) and by 8:45am the day was mine.
That gym went bankrupt a few years ago and that was the end of my great mornings. About 2 years ago I bought myself a used (super great deal!) tredmill and used it some but then I got out of the habit somehow. Anyway....now here I am in my "new" home and seem to have lots of time on my hands with a body that was slowly only wearing certain clothes because I had gained some extra pounds and got out of shape.
After Christmas I decided that it was time to start working out again. I now run 5 times a week on the tredmill. Not real fast mind you and not for miles and miles but I am consistent and I am actually enjoying it. It can get boring if I don't have good music so I am always changing it. When I say changing it I mean from CD to CD or my Ipod that has older music on it. Whatever. As long as it has the right beat! I also lift weights every other day. Not a whole lot but I am consistent. Sure at the gym there are more options and it is funner but to pay gym membership fees when you can do it at home, doesn't make sense. Unless of course you have wads of money and lots of time you don't mind using up going to and fro.
I have lots some pounds and feel way stronger. (just got back from a ski trip and my legs were way stronger getting off the ski lift this year!) I don't think a person needs to go crazy with
exercising to be in shape. You just have to do something and have to do enough. Sure I would love to have really nice abs but I don't feel like working that hard at it. I tell myself that I look pretty darn good for being 48 and having 4 kids.
That's my take. Nice to see you back on line again. Funny post about the stuff that is such a "waste of money now that we are finished having kids"! I still feel funny buying that stuff and tend to hide it all in my grocery basket too! So funny.

I have never been good at at-home work-outs, or gyms either. I love walking outside. Let me know how it goes, now that I live in a place with winters again, working out outside is not that great!
