A little before Carlo left (maybe it was the day he left) I found myself in need of some feminine supplies. Many may not know this, but Carlo is the sole purchaser of these items in our house. He calls from the store asking if I want the multi pack, pearl or standard. He asks if I want Always with or without wings and overnight or the ones in yellow wrappers. He's awesome. I don't know why, but I think it's embarrassing to buy those things.
So there I was, in need. I had no choice but to steal them....just kidding!!!! I had no choice but to go to the store and buy some myself. I had to buy about 20 other things to help camouflage the hygiene items, but I bought them nonetheless. I made sure to get in a line with a female checker and thankfully a lady was behind me in line. I felt like a "big girl".
After telling Jen about my purchases, she suggested I write about it in my blog. I had planned to do it right away and then got cold feet. Please don't let your sons read this. Obviously, for lack of anything else entertaining, I decided to write about it. I understand that for most people, buying tampons and pads is no big deal, but for me it is. Next time, before Carlo goes anywhere, I'll have him buy me a year supply!
I'm also not fond of buying toilet paper. As if not buying those things would suggest I don't need them. :)

Ok this is way way too funny Allyson! I'm so glad you finally spilled it! Seriously most husbands would rather die than buy tampons! Now I know who to call when I need my whiskey. :) Joke!
Haha! Oh Allyson! I am having to control my laughter! This is the funniest post I have read in a long time! I love that Carlos is so ready and willing and shows no shame in buying those feminine products :) This is the best post ever! Haha! I love it!
This is so funny! I love learning this about you! I will never forget one of my college roommates taking me to the store with her and she only bought Prep. H and tampons. I thought I would die! I still could never just lay 2 things like that on the checkout and nothing else!! So good for you for camoflaging, I'm sure she didn't even notice. (:
I hate buying those also. I've sent Brian to get supplies for me too. Got to love these guys!!
One night right after Jay and I were first married I woke him up at 3:00 a.m. and asked him to go to the store to get tampons and Motrin. Jay, kind and groggy went and as he placed those two lone things on the counter the male clerk looked at him and commented, "Rough night, eh?"
Super fun post, Allyson. My respect for Carlo knows no bounds.
You are so funny! I can understand the tampon embarrassment, but toilet paper?!? Everyone should be using toilet paper. You should be embarrassed if you didn't use it. In a couple of years, Christian will be driving so he can go on these "errands" in case Carlo is out of commission. Haha
Actually, a couple of years ago, I went to Costco and bought two Economy boxes of tampons that stay in my food storage. I would hate to be without food in an emergency, but I would also HATE to be without feminine essentials! Can you imagine?!?
When we first got married, I used to get embarassed to buy the feminine essentials-but no more. I wouldn't go and buy them until I had a big old list of other groceries to purchase so that I could hide them under everything else. I'm definately over that, thank goodness it was short lived. Let's face it, we all need 'em and we all use 'em. Nobody cares.
When Todd and I were first married, he used to think it was really funny to walk down the "feminine needs" isle with me and yell from the other end of the isle, " Do you want the scented or unscented tampons? Do you need Super or regular?" Then, he'd take the biggest box of whatever he could find on the shelf and hurl it all the way down the isle at me. It would hit the floor and slide right down to where I was standing-talk about embarrasing! He loves to torment me! I used to get so embarrased-now when he occasionally does it(to remind me how things were in the beginning) we both just crack up and make a big scene if there are other people in the isle with us. From the end of the isle, really loud, I'll say something like, " Hon, can you grab me three BIG boxes of the biggest pads you can find? You know the ones the size of a mattress?" He looks at me funny and says, "Sure Honey! Anything else?" (He knows I don't use pads!)Then he proceeds to load the entire cart with feminine supplies-people just look at us in amazement. Like, wow, that lady sure needs alot of feminine supplies. I bet her periods are bad! Poor husband! Hilarious!! So, what I'm trying to say is, periods aren't the fun part but buying the supplies can be! Just remember, nobody cares!
Double Comment: Cami's story made me think of something WAY more embarrassing that Greg and I witnessed when we had been married a couple of years. We were in "that section" of the store, and we saw this young, very teenage couple, trying to figure out which condoms to buy. They seriously looked 14 to me, and they were obviously flustered by the decision. I was mortified for them. See...It can always be worse!
I remember one day Spence had been gone all day long. I was "fried". He walked in the door and two minutes later walked right back out it with a friend- I think it was Devin. He wanted Spence to go to Walmart with him. I was mad that Spence was going. He asked if I need anything- so naturally I told him I needed some tampons to get back at him. He said "Anything else?" Nope, just tampons. So I made him buy them in front of his friend. I hope he was embarrassed. :-)
You know- if you just bought those reusable pads on etsy, you wouldn't have to ever worry about being embarrassed buying them at the store again! LOL
Allyson - glad you posted this - it did bring a smile to my face. Now that you've revealed this lil' embarrassment, you have to read "My Little Red Book"
Edited by Rachel Kauder Nalebuff. It's a compilation of short stories of women of all ages and backgrounds and their experience of their first periods. I haven't read it but it got a good review.
